5… tipping the balance
The 5th night of Chanuka can never occur on Shabbat.
Are you feeling the Darkness / Constriction … EVEN on this Fifth Day of Hanukkah? Here’s why…
The 5th night of Chanukah carries a profound and unique message.
The 5th night of Chanuka can never occur on Shabbat. This represents great darkness. The power of the Chanuka candle can illuminate the darkest matter. It is the duty of every Jewish person to illuminate even the heaviest darkness. Every Jew has a part of Hashem and is a child of Hashem and when the soul is illuminated by the Holy Light - even the farthest Jew (that part of us that is feeling distant or separated) in the darkest place awakens."
–Lubavitcher Rebbe
The Rav of Kotzk was once asked by his students
"How do you know if a candle is realThe Rav answered,
" By it's ability to light another candle "

Here’s a more detailed description:
It is the only night that can never coincide with Shabbos, symbolizing an independent light / ohr that shines without reliance on external kedusha — a reflection of the eternal strength of Klal Yisroel.
Lighting the fifth ner נר / candle marks the turning point of Chanuka, tipping the balance toward light and hope over darkness and despair. Often falling during the darkest phase of the levanah / moon, it serves as a reminder that even in the deepest חשך / darkness, the smallest flame can grow to illuminate and inspire.
The 5th night draws from the mystical power of the number 5, representing gevura and Divine stability, encouraging us to kindle emunah and resilience in the face of challenges. It is a time to reflect on the miracle of Jewish survival and the unbreakable Dveikus with Hashem that transcends time and space. Unlike the holiness of Shabbos, which is fixed and bestowed from Above, the light of the Chanukah neirot is the result of human effort (hitaruta dletata/ an awakening from below) — our active role in bringing light to the darkest corners of galut. The fact that the 5th night can never align with Shabbos underscores a profound spiritual lesson: this light is so powerful, so enduring, that it shines entirely on its own - the Light of our Essence.
When other nights of Chanukah fall on Shabbos, the neirot Chanukah are elevated by the Kedusha of the day. However, the 5th night, free from the influence of Shabbat, emphasizes a unique and independent light. It symbolizes the ability of Klal Yisroel (and each individual Jewish person) to draw on inner strength and Divine connection from their Essence (chalek Eloka Mimaal / the portion of Hashem within).
This message is deeply empowering. The nights of Chanukah that align with Shabbos reflect the ideal times in Jewish history when Divine brachot uplifted and supported us. Yet the 5th night, represents the intrinsic bond with Hashem despite the circumstances- when darkness shines like light…
