WHAT'S REALLY MOTIVATING YOU?
WHAT'S REALLY MOTIVATING YOU?
by Rav Doniel Katz
Many people accomplish big things in the world by turning their suffering and pain into a fire that fuels them forward. This takes tremendous courage and strength and determination to achieve and is so beautiful, profound... and dangerous.
At some point, any passion and initiative fueled by pain, no matter how subtle and unconscious, will hit a glass ceiling. It will limit your ultimate growth and begin to corrupt the very fruit of your labor.
Why? Because motivation from pain, by definition, requires pain to keep you motivated. It demands that you maintain that darkness at your core. And sometimes, the more successful we are, the more unconsciously dependent and identified we become with that darkness. The harder it becomes to let our pain go.
Oh, the irony, that we expect our external world to flourish and develop, while our internal world only darkens and stagnates.
Realize: Your pain may have helped you launch, but it won't help you soar, or even land.
Only your innate goodness - your soul, your light - will let you complete your mission in the highest, deepest, richest and most positive sense possible.
And only by releasing, layer by layer, every last bit of that pain, can you truly make space for your full light to shine.
Yes, we have the power to shift our locus of motivation at its core. Though be warned: it's not easy. To do so requires us to take a huge leap of faith. To learn how to access and draw on a whole new source of power - a whole new type of fuel - a clean fuel!
To trust that the light is enough, that “the good” is enough, that "the good" is all the motivating power we will ever need. We must be willing to release the darkness and fully embrace the light.
Remember: What got you here won't get you there. Your pain may carry you far, but only your light will carry you home.
