He probably calls it “thousand shields” because earlier on in the chapter, King David sings “A thousand will fall from your [left] side, and 10,000 from your right side. To you they won’t approach”.
“For His angels have been instructed for you, to protect you in all your paths”.

Also it’s surrounded with the verse from the bedtime Shema:
“ in the name of HaShem G-d of Israel, on my right is Michael and on my left is Gabriel and in front of me is Uriel behind me is Rafael and above my head is the divine presence”.
